Dimensions: 10” x 13”
Medium: lime

I’m fortunate to be working on the north Wales coast, so rich in such a variety of bird life. I find shorebirds offer inviting shapes and I enjoy collecting from the rivers Conwy and Clwyd the driftwood on which I mount my carvings. They’re mainly lifesize in native woods, especially lime, oak, ash and sycamore.
My birds are broadly of two kinds. The detailed coloured birds, usually in lime, are textured with a pyrography tool. Stains are used more often than paints because they slip into the wood without clogging the details I’ve carved. Overall, I aim at a balance between realism and woodiness.
The other kind of bird, more smoothly formed, is in plain hardwood or hardwoods – often a bird will comprise more than one wood and some contain over ninety pieces of up to eight woods in the wing area.
My work has been the subject of magazine and television profiles, and I exhibit annually at the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art.
