Every day I walk in my village country park with my dog. We watch the seasons pass, the light change, the colours develop.Familiarity breeds the opposite to contempt - it breeds respect. Every day is different, and I recognize the smallest changes - recording them in my diary, translating them into pieces such as this. A personal record of an insignificant but wonderful day.

The middle section of this piece relates closely to an exquisite chapel floor in Chester Cathedral. From the wild nature of clay and earth symbolised in the upper and lower sections springs the raw material for the tiles and glazes which form the basis of the fine geometry of the floor.

A remarkable reredos in the Cathedral of St Omer in northern France provided a starting point for this piece. The massive wooden screen is divided into many sections, each decorated and resplendent; painted, gilded, carved. The richness of ornament in such altar screens is overwhelming - telling stories, entertaining the eye, celebrating Christianity. This piece attempts to reflect these elements.
